Anna Winger and Jörg Winger, Creators and Executive Producers:“When the Berlin Wall came down, Germany reinvented itself for the fourth time in the 20th Century. Deutschland89 goes back to the so-called “end of history.” Our heroes, spies in the national security apparatus of a country that has collapsed overnight, find themselves at a dramatic crossroads, personally and professionally. Fans on Prime Video and around the world will be surprised and delighted by the paths they take. As always, we were inspired by the true events that – as old certainties totter and new walls are being built – resonate now, 30 years later.”
Philip Pratt, Head of German Originals at Amazon Studios: “For us, the DEUTSCHLAND-series is one of the highlights on Prime Video and we are very excited to present the next chapter to Prime members next year. Prime Video stands for a diverse portfolio of high-quality national and international productions and local Originals with producers like Anna Winger and Jörg Winger especially underscoring our commitment to the German-speaking audience.”
Deutschland89 is a production of UFA Fiction, part of Fremantle, in collaboration with Amazon Studios, Fremantle and UFA Distribution, supported by German Motion Picture Fund, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Creative Europe Programme – MEDIA and Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung MDM. Synopsis: When the “anti-fascist” Berlin Wall falls on November 9th, 1989, superspy Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay) must deal with the consequences. The peaceful revolution has thrown his world into turmoil. He and his fellow agents at the HVA (East German Foreign Intelligence) are reeling. Their government has collapsed, their organization is in chaos and their futures are uncertain, at best. How to play the next hand? Join Big Brother at the KGB? Go West and work for an enemy agency? Use international contacts to begin a new career? Or run off to paradise with hoarded gold? In the face of a new world order, our heroes reinvent themselves.
The first season of the series – Deutschland83 – won numerous accolades, including an International Emmy and Peabody Award as well as the Adolf Grimme Award and Golden Camera award in Germany. For his role as Martin Rauch, Jonas Nay was awarded as best main actor in a drama series with a Golden Nymph at the Festival de Télévision de Monte Carlo as well as the German TV award in 2016.
